Là trường đại học nghiên cứu công lập đầu tiên và duy nhất của Miami, cung cấp bằng cử nhân, thạc sĩ và tiến sĩ, FIU là là trường đi tiên phong trong việc phục vụ cho cộng đồng học thuật và địa phương.
FIU bắt đầu với một tầm nhìn về xây dựng một trường đại học công lập ở Miami, một tổ chức có thể tạo cơ hội cho sinh viên tại một thành phố năng động, phát triển. Nửa thế kỷ sau, tầm nhìn đó đã biến FIU trở thành một trường đại học nghiên cứu được xếp hạng hàng đầu của Carnegie Foundation, một tổ chức văn hóa, một cộng đồng 200.000 cựu sinh viên và một trung tâm giải pháp cho những thách thức của tương lai.
Nơi những người khác nhìn thấy những thách thức, FIU thấy cơ hội. Các nỗ lực nghiên cứu và dịch vụ của FIU nhằm vào những vấn đề mà Miami phải đối mặt trong việc biến đổi khí hậu, toàn cầu hoá nền kinh tế, dân số.
